AFL Architects have released details of their proposed stadium design for Turkey’s bid to host the UEFA Euro 2024 soccer tournament. The Ataturk Stadium seeks to become the new home of Turkish football, featuring a closer relationship between spectators and the game, enhanced acoustics, and world-class hospitality. The scheme involves extensive renovation and adaption of the existing Olympic stadium structure and forms a crucial part of Turkey’s bid for the Euro 2024 tournament, which was submitted in April 2018. In collaboration with the Turkish Football Federation (TFF), AFL has examined the readiness of seven stadia, and the major upgrade and design of three stadia. The extensive renovations of the Olympic stadium will see the integration of modern technology into the existing structure. Zaha Hadid's first private residential home has finally been completed on the north-facing hillside within the Barvikha Forest near Moscow, where pine and birch trees grow up to 20m high. Commissioned by Russian businessman and philanthropist Vladislav Doronin, who also runs real estate companies OKO Group and Capital Group and a luxury and resort hotel brand Aman, the "specaship-looking" residence is the only private home that Hadid had designed in her lifetime. Called Capital Hill Residence, the 2,650-square-metre house is comprised of two major components: the first part is merged with the sloping forested landscape, while a separate tower floats 22 metres above the ground to provide a spectacular view of the forest over the trees. Crystal Houses, the Amsterdam store designed by MVRDV that received international acclaim upon its opening in 2016, has re-opened with a new tenant and a façade which is finally as open as originally intended. The project’s jewel-like façade was proposed as a way for Amsterdam to be home to distinctive, upmarket flagship stores without compromising the city’s historical character. Located on the high-end shopping street PC Hooftstraat, Crystal Houses initially hosted a temporary store for Chanel, but it has now been renovated and re-opened for French luxury brand Hermès. Created for Amsterdam-based retail real-estate company Warenar, Crystal Houses was envisioned as a recreation of the traditional houses that make up PC Hooftstraat, with a dramatic twist: the usual brick façade is replaced by a glass replica, which dissolves into the traditional terracotta bricks on the upper level. In the northern Japanese city of Sapporo, architect Tadao Ando designed a spectacular temple, which opened in December 2015. An essay by Tadao Ando for the Italian DOMUS Magazine discusses his work in Makomanai Takino Cemetery. ‘The aim of this project was to build a prayer hall that would enhance the attractiveness of a stone Buddha sculpted 15 years ago. The site is a gently sloping hill on 180 hectares of lush land belonging to a cemetery. The statue is 13.5 metres tall and weighs 1500 tons. It is made of fine, highly selected solid stone. Until now, the Buddha statue has stood alone in the field, giving an unrestful impression. The client wanted to give visitors a more serene appreciation of the Buddha. Our idea was to cover the Buddha below the head with a hill of lavender plants. We called the idea the ‘head-out Buddha’. Panagia Kapnikarea Church | Athens

The church of Panagia Kapnikarea is one of the oldest temples in Athens and admittedly one of the most significant Byzantine edifices. Sources conclude that it was built in the early 11th century (around 1050) on the former location of an ancient temple that was dedicated either to goddess Athena or Demeter, following the tradition of other early Christian churches. The church is located in the middle of the city’s most lively and crowded downtown street, Ermou, on the way from Syntagma to Monastiraki square and is one of the most typical Athenian monuments. The church is dedicated to Panagia (The Virgin Mary) and has a rather unusual name. “Kapnikarea” is suspected to have been attributed whether from the Byzantine tax “kapnikon” or from the last name of the tax collector (Kapnikares) who was responsible for the church.
